I didn't realize how hard it would be to leave that place. By my sixth year in the state, I felt I was ready for a change. Ready to have more job opportunities for myself and my husband. Ready to get started on having a family. I was so anxious to get started, and so ready to leave to be able to do it.
But now that we're in Boston, I miss living in a small town. I miss the mountains. I miss the quiet of life in Vermont. I miss being in a places where I would love to bring my kids one day. My heart tells me that this is the place we belong.
So I talked to my husband about it. I want to be supportive of his career, knowing that he can't turn around immediately and quit his job. To my surprise, he was completely on board! He told me he never truly wanted to leave in the first place, he just wanted me to be happy. I was so happy I cried. Hopefully we can make the transition back to our beloved state within the next year, if all goes well!

Though there were parts of Boston we really loved, my husband and I weren't big Boston fans either. Maybe it was the cold (even though I grew up in NY) or the fact that we lived on base (Hanscom AFB) most of the time. I'm in Texas now but am soon purchasing an RV to travel the country full-time and I've never given Vermont a nice visit. I think I've been there as a kid but man I don't remember those beautiful mountains and greenery, as shown in your photo.
ReplyDeleteBut I hear ya and I have lived in two places I really didn't feel like I belonged. One was Montgomery, Alabama (that was a culture shock) and Arlington, TX (which is right next to Dallas). We wanted out of Arlington so badly but were stuck for a while. Actually we wanted out of Texas. I'm still not a huge fan of Texas but living in Austin is a whole other deal. Austin is the polar opposite of the rest of Texas, which is kind of cool. ^_^
That's so funny that you mention Austin because before my husband & I moved to Boston, we thought we'd be here for a short time then move to Austin. I've never been but I've heard so many good things about Austin. We liked it because its much more affordable to raise kids than the Northeast! I also get sick of the long winters (even though I'm originally from Minnesota). Ultimately we decided for the next few years we would rather live in a small town again and see where that takes us. Plus its tough living so far away from family!
DeleteHow do you like Austin so far? An RV trip sounds like such a blast. You should definitely visit Vermont if you make it that far north! Its gorgeous right now with the Fall colors.
