Romance & Cannoli at Mike's Pastry

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Last week my husband & I decided to have a little romantic afternoon in Little Italy. I know that once we have kids, these spontaneous adventures will be few and far between, so it means a lot to me to take advantage of that freedom now. As fast as you can say "cannoli," my husband is on board!
We walked around the neighborhood, hand in hand, passing each shop with curious eyes. I thought to myself then how lucky I am that we still have so much fun together, four years later. With very little money, and just a sprinkle of time together, he makes my heart light.

But enough of this sappy crap! Get back to the cannoli! When we walked in the door, it was so busy I thought it would take us twenty minutes to order, but the ladies behind the counter were so fast that we ordered within five minutes. There were so many delicious treats and TONS of cannoli to choose from at Mike's Pastry. Inside there was a few tables, but we took ours to go since it was early in the afternoon.
We got chocolate dipped & mint flavored cannoli. They were HUGE! I could barely eat a quarter of one because not only are they incredibly rich but also intensely sweet.  My husband, on the other hand, ate them both within two days. I preferred the chocolate dipped one, personally. I love mint + chocolate but this particular one had just too much mint and not enough chocolate. Here are a few more pictures. Try not to drool. ;)

Any other Bostonians have bakery suggestions? I don't have a sweet tooth like I used to, but its always handy to know a food bakery for gifts! Let me know. :)

Trip To NYC & Life Since Moving To Boston

Thursday, July 25, 2013

Hey all! Sorry I didn't post yesterday. I've been sick the past couple days and just needed to sleep! Thanks for understanding!
                                                ..............

Last weekend my husband & I took a day trip down to New York to visit my brother-in-law and his girlfriend.  I'm sure most people would love an excuse to visit the city often, but I have a hard time being in New York. I grew up in Minneapolis, which is a city, but nothing compared to New York, and I just need more green space and less people. Since living in Vermont, it may be safe to say I am definitely more of a country girl.
The highlight of our trip was getting to spend some much needed time with family. We went to Central Park and then out to dinner, and mostly just had great conversation. I'm looking forward to when we all have kiddos so all the cousins can play!
Coming back home to Boston, I appreciate it a little more after visiting New York, but transitioning from Vermont hasn't been the most perfect experience. It's a big adjustment financially to move to a city - everything just costs more, from rent to food. It's been hard for us to find restaurants that match the quality of Burlington spots, even though they exceed the price.
On the bright side, there is so much more of this city to explore and I know after more time we'll find where we fit! I hope this is the place where we will have our first child, and for that, I know it will bring us some amazing memories. Anywhere that I can be with my husband, I will make a happy place because he is my home. :)

"Don't take it for granted instead take a look around, quit complaining and build something on that ground, plant something on that ground, dance & sleep on that ground, get on your hands & knees and watch the ants walk around the ground." ~Atmosphere

I hope you enjoyed this post. How have your relocating experiences been? Please comment below and connect with me! Life is so much better when we reach out to each other. Also, let me know if you have any restaurant suggestions in the Boston area!

Unique Cheese Boards

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Its almost the weekend and you know what that means...time for a dinner party! Which means its time to start planning food displays of course! Okay, so you may not be Martha Stewart, but adding small details can make you seem like you are.
I love a unique cheese board. It can be quite a conversation piece! No, seriously. Most people eat with their eyes first. Food just looks so much more delicious when presented in an interesting way, and this is one way that requires very little skill or effort. So go ahead, get a fun cheese board, relax, and just be your charming self!

My husband and I bought this Maple burl cheese board on Church Street from Vermont Butcher Block & Board Company last summer when we lived in Burlington. Each piece is completely unique. I love it so much!

I found this reclaimed slate cheese board on Etsy. Totally goes with the chalkboard style right now!

These boards are made of olive wood from West Elm. Olive wood has always intrigued me, it just looks so smooth and has beautiful natural grain.

This Farm Friends Marble cheese board is just for fun. I mean, I love pigs (and cows). Who doesn't?!

I found an Etsy shop that has maple burls similar to mine. So elegant.

What do you like to have at your dinner parties? Something that is a conversation piece? Something simple that allows the food to stand on its own? Just lots of wine? Tell me about your last dinner party or one that you're planning now! Have a great weekend!

Motivation Station

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

I wanted to write today about motivation because lately, I haven't been very motivated. With everything in my life. You know when you feel down, and that just makes you feel heavy? Yeah, that's me the past couple weeks. I know that I don't like feeling this way, and that I only have to set a few things in motion to be content again, but sometimes, its easier just to let things slide.

Except a few months ago, I made a promise to myself that I would let myself feel everything I wanted to feel, but that I would not let myself dwell in the darkness for too long. I know I deserve to be happy, and I know that I'm the only person in control of my happiness.

So today, I decided to make a choice to get some work done that I had been procrastinating. Once I got to work, I realized that it made me feel so good to get something off my checklist, that I kept going and ended up ahead of where I had planned. Then, because of feeling so accomplished, I made a choice to get a good work out in today for the first time in about a week. Once I started, the motivation compounded on itself and caused me to continue to make better decisions for the rest of the day. That first decision to DO something made a huge difference.
It's not easy. I get it. Most of the time, its easier to sit on the couch, or to eat that extra bite, or to keep things as they have always been. But only when we push ourselves, make ourselves feel uncomfortable, are we able to grow and experience new things. It takes work, and it takes time. But I truly believe that taking small, determined steps, consistently over time, is the key to achieving success.

Ask yourself honestly, who do you want to be, and what are you willing to do to become that person? No one else can do it for you; you are the only person in the world that can change your life. Are you afraid change who you are? Good. Life is not about finding out who you are, it's about creating who you are.
Here are just a few things that have inspired me:
ShayCarl's Inspirational Running Video
Inch by Inch speech set to rowers
Michael Pollen's book, In Defense of Food
The Honeybee blog Health posts
Super Size Me (Documentary, 2004)

What are some things that motivate you? Is it watching Youtube videos? Looking at fitness photos on Pinterest? Reading inspirational success stories? Write your goals in a journal or blog? Let me know what you do to be the best you. And please leave suggestions of articles/documentaries/videos/books that have inspired you!

Great nursery poster!

For all the Willy Wonka fans out there...

Summer Style: Pleated Maxi Skirts

Monday, July 15, 2013

Hope you ladies had a great weekend! Today I am dreaming of long, comfortable, flowing skirts. I have long admired pleated maxi skirts, and I wanted to share a few of my favs from Pinterest!
Lace crop top with a flowy pink skirt. I normally don't wear a lot of pink but this is too beautiful for summer! (Also love the beige & gold bag!)

I saw this on Pinterest awhile ago, but its too gorgeous not to keep sharing. Awesome mustard & mint combination.

I absolutely LOVE this indigo/royal blue color! The statement belt is great, too. (I spy another Chanel bag...)

I always like a good mustard yellow, not just for fall! But I think the navy blue top really makes the skirt pop.

Another lace crop top with a mint slash seafoam colored maxi skirt.

A relaxed, (literally) beach look!

Purple maxi skirt with a jean jacket, out for coffee.

I personally have a hard time finding maxi skirts because I'm so short, but I love to admire them. What maxis do you love for summer? Any crop top or jacket suggestions for maxi skirts? Please comment & share with me!

Moroccan Inspired Interiors

Thursday, July 11, 2013

The other night on Bravo's new show Property Envy, one of the houses featured was a Moroccan inspired home in California. I've always loved Moorish inspiration, particularly the arches & wall carvings, and Pinterest makes it so easy to find new ideas for renovating or even just decorating Moroccan-style.

Insanely gorgeous windows!

Incredible craving detail in the archway.

Living area arches & slotted windows opening to a shaded pool.

Home decor: A quick fix
Seafoam green walls with carved wood adds a nice touch to the entryway.

A great way to turn your backyard into a serene, romantic hangout. Who doesn't love lanterns?

What ethnic/time period styles do you love? Do you have any more ideas for Moorish/Moroccan home decor? Please share them with me!
